Concrete Core Testing & Floor Failure Analysis

Find out what is happening beneath your industrial floor.

CONTAMINATION TESTING

Identify oils, residues, and water soluble salts within the concrete.

FLOOR FAILURE ANALYSIS

Investigate coating separation, surface weakness, and concrete microcracking.

DETAILED REPORTING

Independent laboratory findings with practical guidance for your next steps.

BENEATH THE SURFACE

Understand Your Concrete.
Plan Your Next Floor.

Concrete core testing helps uncover conditions that a surface inspection can miss. Laboratory analysis can identify embedded contaminants, measure salt concentrations at different depths, and examine the concrete beneath an existing coating.

Vested Floors combines site observations with findings from independent laboratory partners to develop detailed reports. Whether you are investigating an epoxy floor failure or preparing for a new resinous flooring system, the results help guide surface preparation, repair planning, and system selection.

LABORATORY ANALYSIS

Concrete Core Analysis: What We Test

Every flooring investigation starts with a specific question. Vested Floors coordinates targeted testing with independent laboratory partners to evaluate concrete contamination, substrate deterioration, and coating failures. The analyses selected depend on the floor’s history, visible conditions, and the information needed to plan the next steps.

Water Soluble Salts

Ion chromatography measures selected water soluble ions, including sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfate. Testing successive slices of a core can show how concentrations change below the surface. These findings help investigate chemical conditions that may affect coating adhesion, particularly when elevated concrete moisture is also present.

Organic Contamination

Solvent extraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) evaluate organic residues within the concrete. Analysis can characterize materials such as petroleum oils, grease, silicone oils, fatty esters, and other hydrocarbons. Comparing different depths helps determine whether contamination is concentrated at the surface or persists beneath it.

Concrete Petrography — ASTM C856/C856M

Microscopic examination of prepared concrete sections can reveal microcracking, paste and aggregate conditions, and evidence of alkali silica reaction (ASR), including near surface distress. Petrography helps investigate whether coating separation involves weakened concrete beneath the bonding surface. The laboratory documents the examination methods and applicable ASTM reference in its report.

Mineral & Coating Examination

X-ray diffraction (XRD) can help identify mineral constituents within the concrete. Examination of cores retaining an existing flooring system can also document coating layers, approximate thicknesses, the prepared concrete surface, and locations of separation. These methods provide additional evidence when investigating a complex floor failure.

FINDINGS & NEXT STEPS

Detailed Reports for Better Flooring Decisions

Laboratory results become more useful when they are connected to the conditions of your facility. Vested Floors brings together site observations, sample locations, laboratory findings, and flooring experience to explain the concerns identified and the next steps available.

Documented Samples

Core locations, visible conditions, and relevant flooring history are recorded so each result can be traced to the area tested. This helps compare affected areas and understand differences across the investigation.

Clear Technical Findings

Depending on the testing scope, reports may include contaminant concentrations by depth, residue characterization, microscopic images, coating measurements, and observations of concrete distress. We explain the findings and identify questions that may require further testing.

Practical Project Guidance

Findings help guide discussions about surface preparation, contamination removal, concrete repairs, and flooring system selection. Where appropriate, we coordinate with the proposed flooring manufacturer to review preparation requirements and system suitability.
