Private Aircraft Hangar Flooring – Hartsville, SC
This private aircraft maintenance hangar in Florence, South Carolina required a complete restoration of its existing resinous flooring system. Years of use had left the previous coating visibly worn, with areas of peeling and loss of adhesion. Because maintenance hangar floors are exposed to aircraft traffic, equipment, chemicals, oils, and routine cleaning, simply recoating the existing surface was not an appropriate long-term solution. The project called for removal of the deteriorated coating and installation of a new high-performance flooring system.
Surface preparation began with mechanical diamond grinding of the concrete to remove the existing coating and create the proper surface profile for the new system. Thorough mechanical preparation is one of the most important steps in any industrial epoxy flooring installation, particularly when an existing coating has already experienced adhesion problems. The floor was prepared back to a sound substrate before installation of the new resinous flooring system began.
Following surface preparation, an epoxy moisture primer was applied to help manage moisture vapor transmission from the concrete and provide a strong foundation for the subsequent coatings. A 100% solids epoxy body coat was then installed to build thickness, durability, and a uniform finished surface capable of handling the demands of an active aircraft maintenance environment.
The system was completed with a chemical-resistant, UV-stable topcoat selected to provide additional protection against chemicals, abrasion, staining, and exposure to sunlight entering the hangar. The completed system provides the facility with a durable, cleanable, professional flooring surface designed for the demanding conditions associated with aircraft maintenance and aviation facilities.
